ASUS Zenfone 5Z Launched


ASUS is the number one manufacturer of motherboards in the world, commanding almost a 40% market share of the motherboard business. Today, one in every three computers houses an ASUS motherboard. It has been voted the world’s “Best Motherboard Brand” for six consecutive years by readers of Tom’s Hardware Guide (THG), a widely-read and respected hardware review website. In many of these polls, which routinely draw tens of thousands of voters, ASUS received more than half of the ballots.

On July 4, 2018, ASUS launched its new phone Zenfone 5Z. The company has made a big deal about the artificial intelligence operations on its new phone. It has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 29,999.  The phone was launched in New Delhi, which was also live streamed via ASUS’s official social media channels including YouTube. ASUS Zenfone 5Z is Flipkart exclusive in India and the sale of this phone begins on July 9.

The Asus ZenFone 5Z has been launched in three variants in India. The base 6GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant has been priced at Rs. 29,999, the 6GB RAM/ 128GB inbuilt storage model comes in at Rs. 32,999, and the top-end variant with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage bears a price tag of Rs. 36,999.

Asus and Flipkart are also offering Rs 3000 discount for ICICI bank debit and credit card holders. There will also Rs 2,200 cashback and 100GB additional data for Jio users who purchase the smartphone.

According to Asus, the ZenFone 5Z utilises the AI Engine inside the Snapdragon 845 to full effect. The company boldly claims it is time to move on from smartphones to intelligent phones. With the ZenFone 5Z, Asus has embraced the AI trend head-on. Almost every aspect of the smartphone, from the software to the camera is infused with artificial intelligence. The gallery and camera apps, particularly, are worth talking about. There’s the usual AI scene detection in the camera, where-in the smartphone can ascertain what you are shooting and change settings accordingly. There are 16 modes on offer at the moment including common ones like dog, cat, plant, food text, and sky.

Asus has come a long way with its Zen UI and it has integrated AI bits that are supposed to make the software experience smarter and hassle-free.

“We embarked on the ZenFone project four years ago with the idea to create empowering luxury for everyone to enjoy,” said ASUS’s CEO Jerry Shen. “Today, the ZenFone 5 Series is the most intelligent ZenFone series ever, utilizing advanced AI algorithms and big-data analytics to provide users with a unique slate of intelligent camera, communication and convenience features,” said Shen.


  • AI Photo Learning:

It lets you teach the phone how you like your photos to look. After one to three weeks, the ZenFone 5Z starts offering edited versions of photos in the moments tab of the gallery. If you like the changes, you can accept the edited photo. If not, you can reject it and choose the original version instead. Over time, this feedback helps dictate how the camera processes images.

  • AI charging:

AI charging dynamically adjusts the charging rate. The phone learns your sleeping patter over a week’s period and optimises the charging schedule accordingly. Say you sleep from 12am to 7am, the smartphone will eventually understand the same and charge your battery rapidly till 80 per cent then hold it there until 5 am – 2 hours before your wake-up time. After which, It will trickle charge the battery to 100 per cent. Asus claims this maximises the battery’s lifespan.

  • OptiPlex 3.0:

OptiPlex 3.0 learns your app usage over time and predicts which application you will use next. Asus claims the said application will be ready to load in the background – with up to 86 per cent faster load speeds.
