Samsung launched its first smartphone for 2018 in India – the Galaxy A8+ (2018). The device will go on sale from January 20, and while the A8+ has been launched more details are awaited for the Galaxy A8, the slightly trimmed-down variant.
Samsung has added a bunch of features to the Galaxy A8+ that are usually reserved for the S-series of flagships. These include Infinity Display, metal-and-glass body, dual cameras and Live Focus mode.
Dual Front Camera with Live Focus
Galaxy A8+ will also boast of a feature that no Samsung smartphone, not even the flagship S-series and Note devices, can claim to offer — dual front cameras. The Galaxy A8+ marks the first instance of Samsung equipping a Galaxy smartphone with a dual-camera set-up on its front side. The upcoming device’s front snappers are a 16MP + 8MP setup, and they are backed by Samsung’s Live Focus photography assistance algorithm for cool effects on your selfies.
The primary camera is a 16 MP unit with an f/1.7 aperture, featuring phase detection autofocus as well as a single LED flash. It can record 1080p@30fps videos. The front camera is also capable of taking 1080p videos.
The dual-SIM (Nano) Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018) runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat, and sports a 6-inch FHD+ (1080×2220 pixels) Super AMOLED display in 18.5:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by the Samsung Exynos 7885 octa-core SoC, with two cores clocked at a 2.2GHz and six cores clocked at 1.6GHz. It features 6GB of RAM.
The dual front camera setup on the Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018) includes a 16-megapixel fixed focus, f/1.9 image sensor and an 8-megapixel f/1.9 sensor. Both the sensors enable the Galaxy A8+ (2018) to provide blurred background in images with a Bokeh effect. Users can also switch the preloaded camera app to have a clear and crisp background as well as a focused foreground. The smartphones have a Live Focus feature to adjust the Bokeh effect while capturing self-portraits. It sports a 16-megapixel rear camera sensor on the back with an f/1.7 lens.
The Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018) sports 64GB of onboard storage, expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB). In terms of connectivity, there are options such as 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, and USB Type-C port. Sensors onboard include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, and proximity sensor. It is powered by a 3500mAh battery, measure 159.9×75.7×8.3, and weighs 191 grams.
